Even surrounded by her housmates in the crowded hall. Ariel felt alone. This was not a new feeling, she had gotten used to feeling miserable, alone, afraid, you name it in her short seventeen years on this earth, why should today be any different? It had gotten to the point where most students knew her enough about her to steer clear. She had gotten a kind of "reputation" so to speak as someone who was a loner and had no desire to change that status. On one hand, that was fine with her, she liked being along, there was a lot less hassle not having to deal with anyone other than herself, but on the other hand, it would be nice to have someone to talk to every now and then. She had her sister of course, and she was here at Hogwarts, but she had her own friends and her own life, and Ariel did not want to intrude.
So here she sat, picking at her food during the annual return from the holidays feast. She had gotten back to the school after another horrendous holiday at home, and as always, she was grateful to return. Hogwarts was her safe place, her refuge from the hell that was her home. She was content here, but no one could really say that she was totally and completely happy, and she was certain that true happiness was not in the cards for her, and it was high time that she accepted that fact. The sooner the better. Part of this sorrow was her home life of course, but there was something else nagging at her too. Recently she had began to question her own sexuality. She had never had a boyfriend of course, being too afraid to open up to boys, but lately, lately she had been seeing girls in a whole new way, and it was confusing her even more.
Sighing, she gave up on her food and sat back waiting for the chance to leave and retreat to her dorm room. Something had to change, and soon, or she was going to go completely crazy.
